Nour Chahine, edited by Alexandre Dalifard

Until Sunday, Gérald Darmanin is in Algiers. A trip that combines private and professional life. During this trip, the Minister of the Interior, accompanied by his wife, meets his Algerian counterpart to discuss the subjects of cooperation in terms of security, the fight against terrorism and in the field of migration.

Gérald Darmanin in Algeria until Sunday. The Minister of the Interior combines private travel with professional travel and leaves with his wife in the footsteps of his family. But obviously, after the state trips of Emmanuel Macron and then Elisabeth Borne, it is also the opportunity to tackle the thorny issue of immigration.

A new immigration law

After three years of diplomatic estrangement between Algeria and France, dialogue seems to have resumed between the two countries. Following the visit of the French President to Algerian territory last August, followed by that of the Prime Minister, Gérald Darmanin’s turn to resume contact with the Algerian authorities to deal with urgent matters. It is about security cooperation and the fight against terrorism. But, more urgent, the file of immigration. Especially since the Minister of the Interior is preparing to present the new law on immigration. The latter plans, among other things, to expel more foreign nationals, in particular Algerians in an irregular situation in France.

For this, he will need the cooperation of the countries from which the illegal immigrants come, such as Algeria. On the Algerian side, we say we are ready to cooperate more with the Algerian authorities. Especially since France has a strong argument, namely the issuance of visas to Algerians which is now conditioned by the resumption of nationals in an irregular situation by their country of origin.
