Alien 9: Is Romulus good? Ridley Scott gives his thoughts on the upcoming film

Director Fede Alvarez reveals he showed ‘Alien: Romulus’ to Ridley Scott. Here is the reaction of the father of xenomorphs.

Ten years after Evil Dead and six years after the reboot Millennium: What Doesn’t Kill Me, Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez returns with the sci-fi film Alien: Romulus, filming of which ended last July.

After the commercial failure of Alien Covenant in 2017, Ridley Scott abandoned the xenomorphs but still produced the feature film.

A fan of the iconic franchise, Fede Alvarez presented an idea to the filmmaker several years ago during a casual conversation. Later, Ridley Scott contacted the young filmmaker again to see if he was still interested and offered to direct the film which will not be linked to the previous opuses.

Guest of the DGA Latino Summit 2023 in Los Angeles, Fede Alvarez revealed to Guillermo Del Toro, also present (the video in its entirety can be seen here), having finished editing Alien: Romulus and having already screened the film at Ridley Scott.

He declares : “I wanted Ridley Scott to be the first to see it. Everyone had let me know that Ridley was relentless. And he’s really tough, especially if it has anything to do with his movies.

He was very harsh about Blade Runner 2049, which in my opinion was a masterpiece. It was hard because it was difficult for him to see his work taken back.

I asked him about the new Top Gun and he replied: ‘Yeah… My brother’s was original and this one is ordinary.’ In short, I saw how scathing he could be, so I told myself that I had prepared myself for the worst with my film Alien.”

Despite his apprehension, Fede Alvarez wanted to meet Ridley Scott so that the latter would come back to his face.

Fede, what can I say? P… it’s excellent.

“Even though he said to me, ‘You destroyed my legacy,’ I wanted to be in front of him and look him in the eye. I didn’t want to get an email saying, ‘Ridley thinks…’ And so he walked into the room, and he said, “Fede, what can I say? P… it’s excellent.”

Alvarez adds: “This is one of the best moments of my life. That a great filmmaker like him, for whom I have so much admiration, sees one of my films and especially this film, and that he speaks to me during an hour of what he liked. One of the best compliments was when he told me that the dialogues were excellent”.

Scheduled in our cinemas on August 14, 2024, this ninth adventure follows a group of young people living in a distant world who find themselves confronted with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

Cailee Spaeny (Mare of Easttown, Priscilla), Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City), Archie Renaux (Morbius, Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman, Aftersun), David Jonsson Fray (Industry) and Aileen Wu are in casting.

For his part, Ridley Scott will present his biopic Napoleon with Joaquin Phoenix on November 22 and will resume filming Gladiator 2 as soon as the actors’ strike ends.
