Between graphics cards
and processors
new generation, AMD’s agenda seems pretty busy.

As a preamble to CES 2022 in Las Vegas, Lisa Su is scheduled to speak through a keynote particularly expected. The CEO of AMD should indeed announce many new features.

“High performance” laptops

In particular, it should be a question of specifying the timing of the Ryzen 6000 series also known under the code name Rembrandt. Note that this range belongs to APUs, solutions integrating a rather muscular graphics solution.

In doing so, AMD intends them for laptops which, in the case of the Ryzen 6000, should see their performance greatly improve. Indeed, according to the information of WCCFTech confirming all the rumors, Rembrandt is advancing the CPU part and the GPU part.

However, it is not yet a question of revolutionizing everything. The latest information does talk about DDR5 support, but we should stay on PCI Express 4.0. The switch to PCIe Gen 5 at AMD should wait until the second half of 2022.

Eight Zen 3+ cores in 6 nm

The Ryzen 9 6900HX should be the first AMD processor to feature the new Zen 3+ cores, a derivative of the Zen 3 taking advantage of greater fineness of engraving, in 6 nm, the famous TSMC N6.

It is a question of integrating eight of these cores for a total of 16 threads. On the cache side, we should not expect to see the arrival of the 3D V-Cache already presented by AMD: it is currently reserved for so-called processors desktop. On the Ryzen 9 6900HX, the typical cache is 4MB for L2 and 16MB for L3.

Finally, the latest information published by WCCFTech report an operating frequency equivalent to that of the Ryzen 9 5900HX, i.e. 4.6 GHz, but consumption should be substantially the same while the power deployed is much higher.

An APU under GPU RDNA 2… finally!

With the Ryzen 9 6900HX, AMD should therefore finally offer an APU leaving aside the eternal Vega Graphics. Rembrandt indeed has the RDNA 2 architecture, even if it has not yet been specified the number of computing units present.

The graphics part of the new Ryzen is called the Radeon 680M and should significantly boost the video performance of the laptops concerned. To support the graphics part, it is a question of integrating the exchange of LPDDR4 for LPDDR5X, although this is not yet confirmed.

Another point that is not yet confirmed: the release date of these Ryzen 9 6900HX. They should be presented on January 4 and we can hope for an exit from the stride, but our colleagues are not advancing anything other than the first quarter of 2022.
