Everything smiles at Starlink, the satellite Internet access service developed by SpaceX, the company of Elon Musk. Following threats to lose the frequency of use in France in 2022, the Council of State finally ruled in favor of Starlink by rejecting the various appeals. Thus, the company can continue to provide an Internet connection to the French.

An expanded offer

Continually expanding its offering, Starlink today announces the worldwide availability of its satellite internet service for ships. This service allows boats to enjoy an Internet connection at sea with download speeds of up to 220 Mbit/s. However, it is important to note that this offer requires a permanent power supply on board and costs 294 euros per month, in addition to the 2,826 euros of equipment.

The Starlink satellite dish and power adapter are water and dust resistant, and are IP56 rated. The router, on the other hand, should be installed below deck, as it is not water resistant.

The Starlink offer is now complete and comes in several versions:

  • For the individuals : 50 euros/month with a cost of 300 euros for the equipment (or possibility of renting it for 15 euros/month);
  • For the companies ;
  • For the nomads: 100 euros/month with a cost of 300 euros for the material;
  • For the planes;
  • And now for boats.

April 19 also marks a milestone for Starlink, with the successful launch of a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 21 satellites.V2 minifrom the Cape Canaveral resort in Florida. This second generation of satellites, more powerful, will notably make it possible to offer Internet access to cars and, in the long term, to smartphones.

A serious alternative

By offering solutions adapted to various needs, Starlink stands out as a serious alternative for very high speed. With an ever-expanding constellation of satellites, performance continues to improve and usage possibilities continue to diversify. The future looks bright for Starlink and its users.

Just as he did for Tesla cars, Elon Musk could decide to adopt a more aggressive strategy by offering cheaper subscriptions that would become competitive, including for people who are eligible for fiber optics. By combining an offer dedicated to smartphones, Starlink has remarkable growth potential. Nevertheless, it is important to point out that this development represents a considerable cost for SpaceX, which must deploy tens of thousands of satellites to support its ambitions.

Despite these costs, Starlink’s expansion could disrupt the Internet access market, providing a viable alternative to traditional wireline solutions. With a competitive pricing strategy, Starlink could attract many users, and thus strengthen its position.
