They’re pretty much best friends. That is why Mauro Caviezel and Carlo Janka also share a room or apartment when they are out and about in the ski circus. One December night, however, Mauro Carlo got a lot closer than the “Iceman” would have liked.
“While I was half asleep, I noticed how Mauro grabbed me with his arm while he was asleep.” Caviezel smiles and gives the explanation: “That was in Bormio, where there was barely a hand’s breadth between my bed and Carlo’s. Of course I didn’t consciously pack for Jänks, but at that moment I was probably dreaming something. “
But the night of Bormio is not the reason why the two Grisons will not sleep in the same room at the upcoming World Cup races in Lake Louise and Beaver Creek. Janka will not be able to travel to the Wild West due to health problems.
“Carlo made great progress in the athletic field last summer, but the condition of his back is clearly inadequate for racing at the moment,” announced Janka’s fitness trainer Michi Bont.
“I would have thrown begging long ago”
The former SRF ski expert describes Carlos’ problem as follows: “Carlo has severe curvatures in his back. In order for him to be able to control this, his strong torso must always be totally tense. This is the case in sliding curves, which do not cause him any problems. But as soon as the curves become more dynamic and bumps appear, he can no longer control his movements. And that results in severe pain. “
Janka has therefore only just completed eight days of skiing in preparation for this winter. Will the last Swiss overall World Cup winner (2009/10 season) be able to continue his racing career at all? “I would have thrown begging in his place long ago,” admits Bont. «But Carlo is a great fighter who wants to give full throttle at least one more time in his favorite race on the Lauberhorn. And we are currently working towards this goal. “
Caviezel suffer from visual disturbances
But what about Carlos’ buddy Mauro Caviezel? The Super-G overall World Cup winner from the penultimate season is still suffering from the aftermath of the severe concussion he suffered in Garmisch last January.
Mauro’s greatest deficit: “It happens that I am in a crouched position and from a certain point of view I see double images. That’s why I rate my chances of participating in the North American races rather small. “
