Alstom: 1st battery train for New Aquitaine

(CercleFinance.com) – SNCF Voyageurs and Alstom present the first of five battery trains ordered by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Hauts-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie Pyrénées-Méditionranée and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’regions. Azure.

The first TER train entrusted by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region has left the Alstom factory in Crespin (59) and has just started its tests.

The battery train project consists of transforming dual-mode electric-thermal trainsets built in the early 2000s to make them 100% electric by replacing the thermal elements with rechargeable lithium batteries to provide up to 80km of autonomy.

The objective is therefore to reduce emissions of pollutants as well as greenhouse gases, with a solution allowing the existing dual-mode fleet to be treated, without investing heavily in electrification work on the rail network.

‘The new dual-mode catenary-battery train is one of the most efficient solutions in terms of decarbonization since it should make it possible to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 85% compared to a diesel train,’ indicates the group.
