(Boursier.com) — Alstom the world leader in sustainable and intelligent mobility, has signed a contract worth approximately €430 million for 10 new 9-car Aventra trains for Transport for London’s Elizabeth Line, as well as for associated maintenance until 2046.
Opening in 2022, the Elizabeth Line is seeing higher than expected passenger numbers and its current fleet of 70 Alstom-built Aventra Class 345 trains would be insufficient to meet demand over this decade and next.

Like the rest of the fleet, the Aventra passenger trains ordered today will be assembled at Alstom’s historic site in Derby, Litchurch Lane Works. It is the only UK site that designs, develops, assembles and tests trains for the UK market and for export.

“We are delighted to have a confirmed workload for the Derby Litchurch Lane site and for the supply chain across the UK,” said Nick Crossfield, Alstom UK Managing Director and Ireland, adding: “The UK remains one of the most important global markets for Alstom.”

The contract includes new trains funded to the tune of £220.5 million by the UK Department for Transport, the order from Transport for London also includes maintenance of the trains until 2046.
