Altitude sickness – Austrian dies on the way to Kilimanjaro

Altitude sickness is caused by the reduced oxygen supply at high altitudes. Symptoms include headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, irritability and, in more severe cases, shortness of breath, confusion and even coma. Women are more commonly affected, as are younger people under 46 and people who suffer from migraines. Lack of fitness is not a risk factor for altitude sickness.
