Always more responsible, Fairphone will sell refurbished devices

It is through a brief press release that Fairphone tells us on September 29 that it will very soon launch the marketing of refurbished devices. Predictably, this announcement will allow the brand to add a string to its bow in terms of virtuous practices in the smartphone market.

In this case, the thing will be done directly on the official website of the Dutch manufacturer, but in a limited way, since initially only the Fairphone 3+ (launched in 2019) will be offered in a refurbished version, under the name “ New Life Edition “. This trial balloon should logically lead to the sale of other refurbished models thereafter.

Fairphone goes refurbished

In line with Fairphone’s mission to promote smartphone longevity to reduce e-waste and conserve critical resources, refurbished phones will complement existing Fairphone device offerings. “, we read in the statement shared to the press by the brand. Fairphone mentions the findings there of the latest report from Ademe (Agency for the environment and energy management), which rightly recalls ” that a reconditioned digital tool makes it possible to prevent the extraction of raw materials and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their manufacturing phase “.

In a more down to earth way, Fairphone explains to us that its refurbished smartphones will have been refurbished on a French site located in Cordon, in Haute-Savoie. The firm promises that tests will have been conducted on these devices to ensure their operation and that they will all have a new battery “or almost”, with at least 80% of its original charge capacity. Finally, Fairphone indicates that all refurbished devices sold on its site (while stocks last) will be delivered with the same two-year warranty as its new products.

Note that despite its efforts to offer consumers more ethical smartphones, the group sometimes allows itself some unfortunate pranks such as the recent marketing of True Wireless bluetooth headphones. Products that are difficult, if not impossible, to repair and regularly singled out for their impact on the environment. In its defense, the brand nevertheless mentions the use of 30% recycled plastics for its headphones and the presence of a battery that is supposed to be future-proof.
