Amazfit GTS 4 and GTR 4 in a short test: Always on the right track thanks to new GPS technology

Amazfit launched three new smartwatches in September 2022. Amazfit GTR 4, GTS 4 and GTS 4 mini come with many new functions and improvements, according to the manufacturer the new GPS antenna technology should even be a world first and industry leader.

The new wearables use a dual-band antenna with what is known as circular polarization. This should enable a more precise position determination, especially in environments where location is made difficult by tall trees or buildings.

According to Amazfit, competitor products with a linearly polarizing GPS antenna can only receive around 50 percent of the GPS signals, with the new own models the value should be 100 percent. The GPS positioning should be on the level of portable GPS positioning systems.

GTR 4 and GTS 4 will support six satellite systems after the first scheduled firmware update. In addition, the import of route data from the manufacturer’s own Zepp app should be possible via an update.

In addition to the new GPS technology, there are various improvements in sports and health functions. GTS 4 and GTR 4 offer over 150 sport modes, recorded training data can be synchronized with Strava and adidas Running if required.

In addition to automatic recognition of 15 different strength training exercises, there is improved sleep monitoring and a revised biosensor. This should be able to record 33 percent more data than its predecessor. All models enable all-day monitoring of heart rate, blood oxygen saturation and stress levels.

According to the manufacturer, the GTR 4 should have a battery life of up to 14 days in normal operation, the GTS 4 should last about eight days. With Alexa, both models offer an integrated voice assistant, music storage and speakers that can output real-time data in sports mode.

The GTR 4 offers a 1.43-inch round AMOLED always-on display, reminiscent of a classic wristwatch. The manufacturer himself speaks of the business style. There are over 200 watch faces including animated and interactive ones.

We had the opportunity to try out the new smartwatches as part of the presentation. The GTR 4 is fairly light, but looks valuable. The haptic feedback when scrolling through the menus feels good. Operation is smooth and there are no stutters.

The AMOLED display appears sufficiently bright and also offers an always-on mode. The GTR 4 reminds us a little of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, also with regard to the menu navigation.

The AMOLED screen of the GTS 4 is also always-on capable, but in this model it is square and 1.75 inches in size. In terms of design, the model is reminiscent of the Apple Watch. However, not the newer models, but the Apple Watch 4 with its wide edges around the screen.

The rubber strap is similar to Garmin watches. It’s soft and flexible. The pre-installed operating system is reminiscent of WearOS. There is an animated smartphone-like weather app and if you have a mobile phone connected, you can also use Alexa via the Zepp app.

GTS 4 Mini: slimmed down and cheaper

The Amazfit GTS 4 Mini is smaller, cheaper and does without the new GPS function of the GTS 4 and GTR 4, among other things. The smartwatch offers a 1.65-inch color display, “only” 120 sport modes, but also a 24- Hour Health Monitoring. In addition, the small model has a good battery life of up to 15 days.

According to our first impression, the operation is not quite as smooth as with the sister models. There is also no haptic feedback when scrolling.

The Amazfit GTS 4 Mini is available for EUR 99.99 in the colors Midnight Black, Flamingo Pink, Mint Blue and Moonlight White. The GTS 4 costs EUR 199.90 and is available in the colors Infinite Black, Misty White, Autumn Brown and Rosebud Pink. The GTR 4 is priced at 229.90 euros, here you have the choice between Superspeed Black, Vintage Brown Leather and Racetrack Grey.

With the new smartphone models, Amazfit is targeting a broad target group. The GTS 4 is ideal for athletes or as an alternative to the Apple Watch. For just under 200 euros, it offers good value for money, many functions, quick operation and a bright display.

As with the GTR 4, the new GPS system is also integrated here for precise positioning and navigation. The GTR 4 can also be used for fitness and sports, but looks like a classic wristwatch and cuts a fine figure at meetings, in restaurants and the like. This model is also relatively cheap at 230 euros, for example compared to the Galaxy Watch 5.

If you are primarily looking for a cheap smartwatch, you cannot go wrong with the Amazfit GTS 4 Mini. The watch is a bit slower to use and the display is not quite as high-resolution, but you can buy the watch for only 100 euros. It is particularly interesting as an alternative to a fitness tracker, as it has a larger catalog of functions as a smartwatch.
