Amazon Music extends its music catalog to Prime subscribers… but (not) just anyhow

It’s hard to get more “good news, bad news” than Amazon’s latest decision around its Prime formula andAmazon Music.

Rather than advertising, Amazon has chosen another no less painful method to entice users to subscribe.

A complete but chaotic catalog

Until now, Amazon Prime subscribers only had access, among their many benefits within the giant’s services, to a catalog of 2 million titles from the music streaming service Amazon Music. Today, that number climbs to 100 million without having to pay more than its classic Prime subscription. And unlike the competition, there’s still no advertising in the middle of the music in this deal that looks, at first glance, excellent. But now there is a big but.

To compensate for this now full access to the Amazon Music catalog hitherto reserved for those paying 9.99 euros per month, Amazon has decided to add a very painful element to Prime members: randomness. Thus, impossible to launch the slightest piece according to your exact desire or an album in order. The user will be forced to undergo a totally random playback of songs from an artist, an album or a playlist. Nice for those who like to peck at random, but very annoying for others, who will therefore probably want to checkout to skip this “feature”.

Through this practice, the company is a little reminiscent here of a dealer who “generously” offers a first free trial of a drug in order to make a customer addicted, then to make him come back and pay…

And the podcasts?

When it comes to podcasts, adding randomness would make even less sense than with music. Amazon has therefore held back here and is content to point out that Prime subscribers can consult a selection of podcasts for free, and always without advertising. The firm also offers podcasts exclusive to its platform, which takes the opportunity to review its interface for the occasion. A system of recommendations and excerpts has also been set up.

The Amazon Music Unlimited subscription therefore removes the randomness of the music part, adds HD sound (as well as Ultra HD and spatial in some cases) and allows you to listen to your music offline. A 30-day free trial is offered, as well as a family offer at 14.99 euros per month for a maximum of 6 accounts.
