Amazon of Brazil – Indigenous peoples protest the killings of Phillips and Pereira in Lima – News

  • Hundreds of people took to the streets in Peru after the suspected murders of journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira in the Brazilian Amazon.
  • In the capital Lima, the demonstrating members of the indigenous peoples, some in traditional clothing, denounced the deaths of Phillips and Pereira.
  • “The blood that was spilled will never be forgotten,” chanted the protesters on their march to the Peruvian Ministry of Justice.

The people at the demonstration also called for more protection of natural resources in indigenous areas. Participants at the forefront of the protest carried banners reading “Protection for land, water and life”.

After the Phillips and Pereira murders in the Brazilian Amazon, tribal representatives in Brazil rejected the police’s assessment that no criminal gangs were involved in the crime. The US government called for a thorough investigation into the background.

Disappeared on June 5th

Phillips and Pereira never showed up again after a field trip in the Amazon. Ten days later, a suspect led police to a location where he said he had buried their bodies.

Human remains unearthed at the site were taken to Brasília for identification on Thursday. On Friday, police confirmed that one of the dead had been positively identified as Philips by forensic scientists. So far, two suspects have been arrested.

Criminal evidence intensified

One of the two arrested suspects confessed to being involved in a murder of the two, federal police said at a press conference in Manaus. He led the police to “human remains”.

These are now being examined. The bodies were found a good two miles from where personal belongings of the two were found. The motive for the alleged crime is still unclear.

According to a regional organization, Philipps and Pereira did not arrive by boat in the city of Atalaia do Norte on June 5 as planned. Pereira had previously reported to the police that he had been threatened several times. He had recorded illegal activities in the Vale do Javari for the authorities.
