Amazon will launch an Amazon Prime Lite plan in India. It will cost less than the standard subscription, and videos streamed on Prime Video may be interspersed with advertisements.

Amazon’s commercial policy on video streaming is ever more aggressive. Prime Video is officially the favorite VOD service of Americans and intends to take the position of world leader, under the nose and beard of Netflix. To do this, the online retail giant buys and creates as much content as it can, as evidenced by the acquisition of MGM studios. Although it recently increased its prices, the streaming platform is more affordable than Netflix and other Disney+. Amazon is, however, studying a pricing formula that would make Prime Video even more accessible.

Broadly speaking, Amazon Prime Lite would offer the same services as the standard Amazon Prime subscription, but for less. You will have to accept some compromises. Thus, the free delivery of the products ordered will only be done in two days at best, and the content of Amazon Prime Video will only be viewable in SD definition and on two devices, one of which must necessarily be a smartphone. According to Le Soir, the platform may impose advertising breaks on its members, like what Netflix does with its “Essential with ads” formula.

The subscription Amazon Prime Lite is currently in beta in India. It is therefore not certain that the experience will be reproduced elsewhere in the world. Indians interested in this formula will have to pay around €11.3 per year to take advantage of this service, while standard Amazon Prime costs around €17/year.

Will this formula be reserved for Indians? No one knows yet. This country of approximately 1.4 billion inhabitants in any case represents a very large reservoir of new subscribers, and therefore revenue, for Amazon. As a reminder, in France, Amazon Prime costs €69.90 per year. In the same proportions as the tariffs applied in India, Amazon Prime Lite could therefore cost between €45 and €50 per year in France.
