Amazon wants to change our view of e-readers. During its major back-to-school conference, during which new Echo and Ring gadgets were announced, the ogre of e-commerce returned to its first love by presenting a Kindle model: the Scribe.
A Kindle for taking handwritten notes
With its 10.2-inch screen, the Scribe is a hybrid gadget between a tablet and an e-reader. She is obviously able to download and display ebooks, like all Kindles before her, but can also be used as an electronic notebook to take notes or scribble a few ideas in a hurry while reading a book. Because yes, the Scribe is marketed with a stylus and has features similar to those of a graphics tablet. “The Kindle Scribe is the best Kindle we’ve ever built, creating a reading and writing experience similar to real paper […] It’s ideal for annotating documents, managing your to-do list or jotting down an idea”, brags Amazon.
The Kindle Scribe therefore wants to go beyond the reading experience with useful features for viewing PDF documents, taking notes and sharing them with the people concerned. Particularity compared to a traditional tablet, it keeps a black and white e-ink screen which gives it an autonomy of “several months for reading and several weeks for writing”. The basic stylus is completely passive and does not need to be recharged. A premium stylus (with an eraser and a button to toggle between pencil and highlighter modes) exists for those who want more versatility.
Price and availability
In terms of technical characteristics, the Scribe is therefore equipped with a 10.2-inch backlit and anti-reflective screen displaying 300 dpi. The lighting temperature is adjustable, like on the Kindle Paperwhite. The gadget is available with 16, 32 or 64 GB of internal memory. Alas, no waterproof certification is given; so be careful if you decide to scribble notes at the beach.
The device has a price of 370 € and should be released on November 30, 2022. It is already available for pre-order for those in a hurry.
