Streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+ have already shown the way, and now Amazon Prime Video is following suit: From January 29, 2024, the streamer will place advertising in all series and films in the Prime Video program – initially in the USA. From February 5, 2024 also in Germany.

It was announced as early as September 2023 that Amazon planned to place advertising on its in-house streaming service. Even back then, it was already clear that the company was operating a little differently than the competition. Instead of introducing a separate advertising subscription, Amazon simply runs advertising with the standard subscription – the only subscription variant to date.

If you want to forego advertising, you have to take action and pay a surcharge. In Germany you have to pay an extra charge of 2.99 euros. They also cost 2.99 US dollars, which would actually correspond to around 2.69 euros. So we have to pay a little more in this country due to the current exchange rate.

You also have the option to pre-order the ad-free version so that you can continue watching without advertising from February 5, 2024. However, Amazon reserves the right to change the price for this booking from time to time.

The reason for this change was that the advertising revenue should be used to produce new content. “This change will allow us to continue to invest in compelling content and to increase these investments over a long period of time. Our goal is to run significantly less advertising than linear television and other streaming TV providers,” he said Streaming service in a message to Prime subscribers (via TVLine).

German Prime members will also gradually receive emails about changes to their Prime subscription:

“Dear Prime Member, We are writing to you today to inform you of an upcoming change at Prime Video. Starting February 5th, titles on Prime Video will contain limited advertising. This allows us to continue to offer top entertainment and to invest in live sports content and increase this investment over the long term. Our goal is to show significantly less advertising than traditional television networks and other video streaming providers. There is no need for you to take any action and the current price of your Prime membership will not change. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional €2.99 per month, which you can sign up for here.”

Purchased and rented content from the Prime Video offering should continue to be free of advertising. The changes will initially come into force in the USA, Great Britain, Germany and Canada, and advertising will also be shown to subscribers in France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and Australia over the course of the year.
