(Boursier.com) – While health experts fear a tidal wave of Omicron variant in early 2022, theaters filled up on Thursday evening across the Atlantic to celebrate the release of the last opus of the spider-man, “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.

The American cinema operator AMC Entertainment, thus indicated to have known a record attendance for the start of a film in December, with 1.1 million tickets sold in its theaters to see the film Thursday evening. The attendance was also strong in AMC theaters abroad, said the group, without giving figures.

On Wall Street, where AMC Entertainment is one of the most popular “meme stocks” for stock marketers on the “WallStreetBets” forums (social network Reddit), AMC stock was soaring 23% on Friday, around $ 30.

40 million admissions in Q3, reduced loss

AMC, the leading American cinema operator, also has a strong international presence, and operates a total of some 950 theaters and 10,500 screens. Very affected by the 2020 confinements linked to the coronavirus, the group has also been challenged in recent years by the rise of video streaming.

The improvement in the health situation in 2021 and the release of several “blockbusters”, however, made spectators return to dark rooms. In Q3 2021, AMC posted higher-than-expected sales to $ 763.2 million, down from just $ 119.5 million a year earlier, in the midst of the pandemic wave.

The net loss was reduced to $ 224.2 million from $ 905.8 million in Q3 2020. AMC reported nearly 40 million admissions in Q3 compared to approximately 22 million in Q2. The net loss per share reached 44 cents, lower than analysts’ expectations (-53 cents).
