AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX, an insufficient evolution to catch up with Intel?

One processor
which combines Zen 3+ and RDNA 2 to significantly exceed the previous range of APUs from AMD.

On the occasion of the last CES in Las Vegas, AMD lifted the veil on the Rembrandt APUs, intended to replace the Cézanne range. AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, wasn’t very specific on the performance side and just pointed out that the new APU marked a lot of progress.

Zen 3+ and RDNA 2

This is not a surprise, insofar as Rembrandt will allow Ryzen 6000-H processors to mark notable developments. As for the CPU cores, we can actually count on a refresh of the Zen 3 architecture, with Zen 3+ and its transition to the 6 nm node.

The graphics part will not be outdone, since it will be a question of integrating RDNA 2 with 12 calculation units for the Ryzen 7 and, of course, for the most powerful models in the range, the Ryzen 9 6980HS, Ryzen 9 6980HX, Ryzen 9 6900HS and Ryzen 9 6900HX.

It is this last model which is today concerned by a small leak which allows us to learn a little more about its potential. As often, this information must be taken with some hindsight, especially since it only concerns measurements under Geekbench 5.

Rembrandt ahead of Cézanne

The Ryzen 9 6900HX will have 8 cores and 16 threads. It will be equipped with 4 MB of L2 cache and 16 MB of L3 cache, while its base frequency is set at 3.3 GHz and 4.9 GHz for the boost. There is talk of a TDP of 45 W, and the table is completed by RDNA 2, whose 12 calculation units would be clocked at 2.4 GHz.

At the heart of a Lenovo PC with 32 GB of memory, the Ryzen 9 6900HX scores 1,593 points in single core on Geekbench 5, and 10,151 points in multi core. These values ​​allow it to significantly outdistance its predecessor, the Ryzen 5900HX, a Cézanne model: 12.4% better in single coreand even 32.5% better in multi core.

On the other hand, compared to Intel’s Core i9-12900H, the Ryzen is less festive. The Alder Lake-P CPU can count on 14 cores and 20 threads to take a fairly logical advantage: from 7 to 21% better in single coreand from 37 to 42% in multi core. Of course, consumption and chip prices will matter.

The Ryzen 6000-H should be launched on the 1er next February.
