At CES 2022, AMD presented Ryzen 6000 processors and Radeon 6000S graphics cards and new 6000Ms.
AMD has just held its traditional CES conference. This year, the Santa Clara firm has essentially renewed its range of mobile chips, dedicated to the world of the laptop PC.
Ryzen 6000
Let’s start with the CPUs. AMD has announced the Ryzen 6000, processors dedicated to laptops.
These processors are based on a new architecture called Zen 3+, an improved version of Zen 3 from previous generations. They are supported for the graphics part by the RDNA 2 graphics architecture, present in particular in the latest generation consoles, which was not the case with the latest mobile chips from AMD. Side finesse of engraving, it will be necessary to count on 6 nm.
These processors are compatible with DDR5 RAM, USB 4 and Wi-Fi 6E.
What to do without a graphics card?
According to Dr. Lisa Su, the president of AMD, this is the fastest Ryzen ever presented with peaks at 5 GHz, a computation speed multiplied by 1.3. Graphics performance would also be doubled thanks to the RDNA 2.
To get a more precise idea of the evolution of this chip, AMD for example compared a Ryzen 7 6800U with its previous mobile chips, the Ryzen 7 5800U. The firm promises a performance increase of 69% for encoding, 125% in 3D rendering and 100% in game at 1080p.
The company has mainly focused on a gain in multi-core power, a point on which the Ryzen tend to be slightly behind. Dr. Lisa Su thus announced a gain of + 28% on cinebench in multicore and 11% in single-core. On PC Mark 10, a rather popular benchmark tool, the measured gain would be 28% compared to the Ryzen 5800U.
The new architecture would make it possible to achieve up to 24 hours of autonomy in video viewing thanks to Zen 3+ and 6 nm or software improvements. In streaming, the gain would be 40%, while in videoconferencing, AMD measures 30% of the gain.
In game, what does it give?
For the first time, therefore, a laptop PC CPU incorporates the RDNA 2 graphics architecture, with up to 12 graphics units for the most powerful processors. Right off the bat, this has two clear advantages: it is the first mobile APU to support ray tracing. FSR, AMD’s version of DLSS, is also enabled on the Ryzen 6000s, which will undoubtedly represent an immediate performance boost.
As an example, AMD cites for example the all new Ryzen 7 6800U, capable of running Far Cry 6 at 59 FPS at 1080p. A gain of 51% compared to the old architecture.
On Call of Duty: Vanguard, count 114 FPS, on Deathloop, 73 FPS. All this without a dedicated graphics card.
AMD also shared a comparison with the Intel Core i7 1165G7 or the GeForce Mx450. If the figures which are put forward below hold true, AMD would indeed take a big step forward.
To end this overview, let’s add that the Ryzen 6000 will be compatible with USB 4, capable of transferring a movie in 4K in 7 seconds, with the new PCI-E Gen 4 standard, with HDMI 2.1, Display Port 2 and AV1.
Many partners have already made it known publicly that they want to equip themselves with Ryzen 6000 processors like Acer, Alienware, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Razer… The first models arrive from February.
New Radeon 6000S and 6000M (yes nobody understands anything anymore)
Let’s move on to graphics cards. On this subject, AMD has gone much faster, simply announcing a slew of new models. For the mobile part, these are grouped into two ranges. The RX 6000S range, dedicated to thin computers, but hopefully powerful, and the RX 6000M, which could be compared to Nvidia’s mobile GPUs, dedicated to gaming PCs.
In the RX 6000S range, three models were announced, the RX 6800S, RX 6700S and RX6600S. On the RX 6000M side, you will find, starting from the most powerful to the most modest, the RX 6850M XT, RX 6650M XT and RX 6650M, then the RX 6500M and RX 6300M.
AMD has not shared in detail the performance of these various cards, but a leak from the Videocardz site allows us to take a look at the capabilities of these chips. Unsurprisingly, the most powerful model will probably be the Radeon RX 6850 M XT, which boasts a monstrous TGP (for a mobile card) of 165 W.

Then, surprise of the chef, AMD presented us with an entry-level graphics card for desktop PCs. This one is called RX 6500 XT (if you can’t keep up with those names anymore, don’t worry, that’s normal).
Here is a small comparison AMD shared with Nvidia’s GTX 1650 and its own Radeon RX 570, released in 2019 and 2017 respectively.
Its main interest compared to an older card is undoubtedly the presence of the FSR, which would on average increase FPS by 46% according to AMD. Release date scheduled for January 19 at a very attractive price of $ 199.
Zen 4, already?
At the very end of the conference, AMD did not resist presenting us with the Zen 4 architecture, or at least presenting us with just enough to make our mouths water.
AMD therefore confirms that the next Zen 4 architecture will indeed be engraved in 5 nm and that it will equip the Ryzen 7000. The Radeon 7000 are also in the pipeline, as specified by the president of AMD.
The latter has promised that we will learn more by the second half of the year.
