Renault announces the creation of its new Ampere electric division

As part of its Renaulution, the French manufacturer Renault is creating its new division dedicated to all-electric, Ampère, with the ambition of selling more than 1 million electric cars by 2030.

In the constantly evolving landscape of the automotive industry, Renault is pursuing its strategy with the creation of Ampère, its new division entirely dedicated to electric vehicles.

This initiative marks a turning point for the French manufacturer, which aims to position itself not only as a leader in the electromobility sector but also aims to position itself as a major player against Tesla and Chinese manufacturers.

More agility for more competitiveness?

Traditional manufacturers have taken the full brunt of the ban decreed by Brussels to no longer authorize the sale of new thermal cars from 2035. A revolutionary change of direction on an industrial scale which forces manufacturers to review the design of their cars, because in addition to having to run on a battery, they have also become ultra-connected, packed with technology, driving aids and more focused on comfort and infotainment. To follow suit, Renault is trying to make its Renaulution.

Thus, Ampère was officially launched at the beginning of November 2023, to symbolize the manufacturer’s commitment to its transition. This
new entity aims to be the spearhead of electric innovation with the objective of developing and marketing a complete range of electric vehicles. By 2025, Renault has in fact promised to market 4 electric cars: the Megane E-Tech electric, the Scenic E-Tech electric, the Renault 5 and the Renault 4. Thus, Ampère is not a new manufacturer, but a management entity. The vehicles will always be badged Renault in dealerships.

Ampère aims to optimize production costs through the use of modular platforms, the CMF-EV in particular, and the vertical integration of the value chain. This platform offers more flexibility in design and performance, which will allow this division to offer vehicles adapted to different market segments.

In addition, Renault, through its new division, intends to accentuate the development of Software with more than 20 partnerships in the field including Google, Qualcomm, Valeo and STMicroelectronics.

Investors to convince

Finally, note that Renault emphasizes that its new division adopts a horizontal strategy, which gives it greater agility, speed and
capacity for innovation. This entity now supervises a workforce of 11,000 employees within the group, of whom 35% are engineers. Ampère has 11 sites in France, including four major industrial facilities: ElectriCity, which includes the Douai, Maubeuge and Ruitz factories, as well as the Cléon establishment.

The new step for the manufacturer will be to attract investors on November 15 during a “Capital Market Day”. Nissan and Mitsubishi will take shares in Ampère even though the divorce with the members of the Alliance, of which these manufacturers are part, is complete. Finally, Ampère should go public by the end of the year.
