PlainSight wants to make life easier for farmers by counting their sheep with 99.7% accuracy. Beware of runaway sheep.

Over the years, artificial intelligence is becoming more and more present in our societies. If we remain very far from a so-called “strong” artificial intelligence, depicted in many dystopian works and which would be able to truly take control, the fields of application of our so-called “weak” AIs, designed to very specific tasks, are now legion. PlainSight, a Californian company specializing in artificial intelligence, offers a platform for counting sheep.

Do androids dream of electric sheep?

The objective of this sheep count is not intended to promote falling asleep, but rather to help breeders. With an accuracy of 99.7%, this model must be able to spot a runaway sheep – or simply lost or dead – in a herd of just over 300 animals.

Well, this kind of counting operation based on visual recognition is normally not insurmountable in 2022. Moreover, PlainSight’s expertise in AI is not limited to counting harmless ruminants. In the field of agriculture, it is particularly possible to monitor the feeding of cattle.

Among the many other applications developed by the PlainSight teams, for other sectors, let us mention in bulk the follow-up of the filling level of bottles, the identification of drugs or the recognition of masked/unmasked humans. Remember that some countries like South Korea are using facial recognition to deal with Covid-19.
