an ecological and fantastic animated film in the spirit of Jules Verne

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – TO SEE

Trash life… And it would be more beautiful if the thick layer of pollution disappeared from the city. The inhabitants of Chimney Town (“chimney town”) could then discover the color of the sky, or admire the stars at night. But no one, apart from a few wacky beings considered to be enlightened, believes in the existence of a space beyond the clouds.

Japanese animated film by Yusuke Hirota, On the other side of the sky tells the adventures of a little boy, Lubicchi, and a creature made from waste, Poupelle (and not Poubelle), a being with a big heart, comical and blundering, to which Philippe Katerine lends his sweet voice in the French version . The two friends will defy the authorities and their armed wing, the Inquisitors, a sort of militia responsible for monitoring the population, locked up in a smoke screen. Most men and women are unaware of the existence of the sea, the sky, spending most of their time working.

Committed, in the (polluted) air of the time, the scenario is no less funny and dreamy

Committed, in the (polluted) air of the time, this scenario, which the young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg would not reject, is nonetheless funny and dreamy: the story is not violent, apart from a scene of a fight, and the aesthetics of the industrial, graphic city, where a few bronze lights pierce, is successful. Recommended for children aged 6 and up, the film is based on Akihiro Nishino’s bestselling book, Poupelle and the city without sky, produced thanks to crowdfunding, published in France by Nobi Nobi, in 2018.

Comedian and comedian known in Japan, the author very early had the desire to adapt his work to the screen, creating the buzz and even managing to organize, on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower, in Paris, in October 2019, a free exhibition of illustrations by Poupelle and the city without sky. A few months later, the pandemic and confinement fell on our heads. And without the sky, what do we do? For its part, the word “essential” found another meaning.

strength of friendship

On the other side of the sky precisely works on the fundamentals of a free, ecological and united life – the carbon footprint of the production of the film is however not specified in the press kit. Lubicchi and Poupelle are two solitary beings, and the film also tells of the strength of friendship, as well as the importance of overcoming prejudices: because who would want a friend made of scrap, giving off the smell of garbage chutes?
