  • Compared to “The Mandalorian”, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and Co. “Andor will be completely different.
  • The new “Star Wars” series will be filmed using real locations and sets.
  • So far, Disney + has always used a virtual background for the “Star Wars” series, called StageCraft.

Fans of the “Star Wars” universe are waiting for “Andor”. The start date was recently postponed and a new trailer for “Andor” was released. Now the new Disney+ series will not be released until September 21, 2022, but that shouldn’t spoil the anticipation – nor any other fact that sets the series apart from “The Mandalorian” and Co.!

“Andor” wasn’t shot with the help of StageCraft, more specifically with the help of Disney’s The Volume. The Volume is a sound stage with LED panels. The LED panels simulate a virtual background in front of which the film is shot. So Mando could be shot very quickly and you didn’t have to visit real locations.

The filmmakers also did not have to resort to green screens, thus saving time in post-production. This is no longer the case with “Andor” after both “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and “The Book of Boba Fett” used modern technology.

Showrunner Tony Gilroy describes the series as “old-school.” The sets were built for real and the stars just rave about how great it is to shoot on real locations. US magazine Screen Rant describes a statement by leading actor Diego Luna as follows: “It’s wonderful as an actor. Everything is mechanical. You can interact with real things.”

Luna was taken up a mountain for hours to film a scene there. “All you see is the sky, trees, rivers and lakes. Stunning! It’s like being on another planet,” reveals the Disney+ series star.

The real locations and functional sets allow for much larger and more well-designed shots to be shot because the camera can pan in any direction and every angle of the set can be filmed. One is not reduced to filming in front of a “picture wall”.

StageCraft was even used on Thor: Love and Thunder, and the Marvel film drew criticism. The scenes would feel too small. Luckily that won’t be the case with “Andor”!

“Andor” is the next “Star Wars” series to start in the Disney+ New Releases program. Then it continues with other “Star Wars” new releases. Fans are still waiting for The Mandalorian season 3.
