Android 13: Check here if your phone gets the Tiramisu update

ANDROID

Android 13 will be released in autumn 2022. We reveal how you can test the new cell phone OS in advance, what innovations it offers and which cell phones and tablets are likely to receive an update.

Android 13

Google has released the first developer preview of Android 13. From April you should at least be able to test the new OS on Google Pixel phones via the Android beta program. Overall, Google plans four beta versions for the new OS.

When will Android 13 be released?

In June 202, Android 13 is expected to achieve “platform stability” according to Google’s plan. Then there will be no more changes to the APIs or other innovations. The fourth and last beta, which essentially corresponds to the final version, is supposed to appear in July. This could then be published in August 2022. Google should already give us a comprehensive preview of Android 13 at the Google I/O in May. The Google I/O will take place on May 11th and 12th in 2022.

In this update roadmap, we keep you up to date on all the rumors and news about Android 13 and reveal which phones are likely to receive the OS.

What’s new in Android 13

The first developer preview of Android 13 already contains the first innovations.

Revised Permissions

This is how Google is revising the system permissions. In the future, these will be smaller. This means that if you want to share pictures with an app, it no longer needs access to the entire phone memory, but thanks to a new interface it only has access to your photos.

Material You is stretched

The Material You theme introduced with Android 12 will be expanded and will also affect third-party icons in the future.

Please note: The following innovations are so far only unconfirmed rumors. So it’s not certain that Android 13 will really offer these.

Scan QR codes with locked phone

Scanning QR codes could be significantly faster with Android 13. According to an insider, Google should integrate a QR code scanner directly on the lock screen.

NFC payments with additional profiles

With Android 13 you should also be able to pay with other profiles on the cell phone using NFC. For example, you can also use your saved card for contactless payments with the work profile.

Support for other Private DNS standards

With Android 13, “DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH)” should be supported natively by the mobile OS as a standard, so far Android only offers support for the private DNS standard “DNS-over-TLS (DoT)”. With Private DNS you encrypt the communication between your end device and the DNS server.

Bluetooth LE audio

Android 13 could get the Bluetooth LE audio feature. On the one hand, the power consumption should be reduced and on the other hand the quality of the sound should be increased. It should also be able to send multiple audio streams to an unlimited number of devices.

New notification features

With the new operating system, you should be able to decide which apps are allowed to send notifications and which are not. You should also be able to choose the language in which an app is run. This can be different from the system language.

TARE system

With the TARE (The Android Resource Economy) system, Android keeps track of foreground and background activities, saving resources. This is to reduce battery consumption.

New design of “Output Choice”

The “Output selection” should get a new look with Android 13. This gives the “old” volume controls a new coat of paint. Disconnected devices should also be grayed out.

Tap to transfer

With Android 13, you should get an on-screen notification when you’re playing media on your phone and you’re close enough to another device. You should be able to tap this notification to play music or a movie on the other device, for example. Google is said to call the feature “Tap-to-Transfer”.

Turbo for games

Android 13 should get a new interface. Games can transfer the current status to them. If the game is now loaded, the processor can allocate the most resources to the game. This should start the title particularly quickly.

New tile for QR code scanner

In the quick settings of Android 13 you should get a new tile for the QR code scanner.

Running virtual machines

The “mainline module” should allow you to run virtual machines on your cell phone. A developer launched Windows 11 on the Pixel 6 this way. This is made possible by the virtualization framework pKVM (Protected Kernel Virtualization Mechanism).

Stream apps to PC

Android apps should be able to be used via the browser on the PC. The mobile phone with Android 13 streams them to the PC. Whether the feature will remain exclusive to Pixel series smartphones is currently uncertain.

Automatic clipboard clearing

The clipboard should be automatically deleted with Android 13. The feature is said to be similar to that of Gboard. Furthermore, all haptics of the mobile phone are deactivated in silent mode.

Adjusting the brightness of the LED lamp

Android 13 may allow you to adjust the brightness of the camera’s LED lamp. This is evident from the code of the Developer Preview.

Saving ID documents on the smartphone

With Android 13, it might be possible to store ID documents such as driver’s licenses on smartphones. However, some things like the IC HAL standard are a prerequisite for this.

Special features for tablets

Android 13 could offer many innovations for tablets. The device with Android 13 could be able to recognize whether it is in a charging dock and thus adjust the energy saving behavior.

In hub mode it might be possible to share apps with different profiles on the tablet. It should not be necessary to exchange login data or switch between profiles. The navigation bar could get a child mode with Android 13. The screen is locked, so leaving the current app or task is not possible.

What is the nickname for Android 13?

Since Android 10, epithets in new Android versions are history. However, the tradition lives on within Google. The new Android 13 should be called “Tiramisu” on Google.

Which phones will get Android 13?

Smartphones from Google, Samsung, Nokia and also Vivo, Honor or OnePlus as well as Sony and Xiaomi will probably get Android 13. Probably only Huawei devices will not be considered with an update, since these cell phones should have their own operating system.
