A developer managed to make it work Windows 11
on his Google Pixel 6
. He was also able to launch a small game of DOOM.

The developers have had access to a version of Android 13 for a few days. Some have generously shared a few snapshots of the operating system, others share their discoveries. This is the case of kdrag0n, which was able to run Linux distributions, but also Windows 11 in a virtual machine on a Google Pixel 6.

When Windows invites itself to Android

The developer shared several footage via his Twitter account. He reports that despite GPU acceleration, which is not supported, Windows 11 works fine. In another tweet, he also kicked off a small game of DOOM (Chocolate DOOM) using a keyboard to make the experience more comfortable.

For the technical aspect, the implementation is quite complex. You can read a blog post about Android 13 virtualization posted by Mishaal Rahman. Basically, kdrag0n exploits features of the KVM hypervisor (Kernel-based Virtual Machine). Google has created a new virtualization framework aimed at standardizing support for virtual machines that is based on crosvm, a VMM (virtual machine monitor) originally used to launch Linux apps on Chromebooks.

Android 13 launched next September?

As it stands, it’s hard to know how far Google will facilitate the use of virtual machines under Android 13. But obviously, they could be one of the notable additions of this version of the OS. From there to imagining one day a single device capable of embracing all systems, relating to both the PC and the smartphone, there will undoubtedly be a few additional steps to take.

Other more minor features of Android 13 include the ability to choose the language for each app. Google could start rolling out Android 13 in the fall of 2022.

Finally, remember that the “reverse path”, easy access to Android applications on a Windows 11 PC, was one of Microsoft’s promises to promote its operating system. This functionality, integrated in a public preview last month, is on the way to being generalized.
