  • Android Auto will soon be unavailable for some users.
  • The minimum requirements of the software are to be increased.
  • At the same time, Google is stamping out one of the few alternatives.

Android Auto is probably one of the most important apps for most Samsung users, as it makes the connection to the car much easier and clearer. A redesign was actually announced for the app in the summer of 2022, but users are still waiting in vain for it. Instead, Google has now pushed an update that increases the minimum requirements for the smartphone software.

What software version is required for Android Auto?

With the new update, you now need at least Android 8 or newer on your smartphone. While this applies to around 90 percent of Android users, according to a report by 9to5Google, a tenth of users are now unable to use the app. Considering the size of the market, that’s quite a lot of people.

At the same time, there is a lack of alternatives

In addition to the problems with Android Auto, Google has now also started to discontinue alternatives. The popular Driving Mode Dashboard app is set to be retired on November 21, which is slowly but surely forcing users to resort to Google Maps or third-party apps.

If you are affected by the problem, we recommend that you check whether your phone can be updated to a newer version. How to update your phone:

  • Open the settings on your phone.
  • Tap on ”About phone” and then on ”Android version”
  • There you can see which version of Android is installed on your phone.
  • Now go back to the start menu of your settings and select ”System”.
  • Then tap System update.
  • If an update is available, you can select it.
  • Then simply follow the on-screen instructions.
