Android: Google Maps will better indicate which direction you are looking


In the GPS market, we find Waze and Maps, both owned by Google. Each one is constantly enriched with features. For the first, 6 new features have been deployed. As for the second, an update will finally correct a basic functionality by indicating exactly in which direction you are looking.

Android will finally be entitled to the resolution of this problem as reported in a new post published on the official blog of the OS developers. The Fused Orientation Provider (FOP) feature promises to enable “consistent orientation of the device” when using Maps.

This has probably already happened to you, the blue dot with its directional radius indicates that you are facing a street when not at all. And then doubt sets in and you lose precious minutes finding the real direction. Not always practical when you have to go to an appointment, for example.

PFO “merges signals from the accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer” to work. The blog post states that Google has “recently made changes to better handle magnetic disturbances and improve reliability of the Maps icon” but also third-party applications.

Old smartphones will be entitled to it
