Google is “streaming” the new features recently made to the file explorer of its Google Drive application… onto Android’s “Files” file explorer. Excellent news.
After having clearly strengthened the File Explorer game on the Google Drive application, Google is extending these new features to that of Android through the “Files” application. Among them, an “automatic capture” mode allowing you to scan documents much more easily using the camera, but also some additional tools to refine the scanning effortlessly.
Scanning documents on Android just got easier
As reported by @Nail_Sadykov on X.com, a floating button has appeared on Google Files. Clicking on the latter has the effect of launching the same device as on Google Drive, allowing documents to be scanned using machine learning… for better results.
The camera preview interface then has two modes: Manual and Auto Capture. In the case of automatic capture, everything is done without user intervention. The AI automatically identifies the object or document, then scans it immediately. Manual capture requires you to frame the document yourself and click on the trigger button.
As stated Android Police, whatever the mode used, several tools will be accessible later in order to improve the result, crop it, or even add filters. Once scanning is completed, the document will be saved by default in Google Files, in a dedicated folder.
Android File Explorer, even better
We also learn that Google has added a “Drive” shortcut within the Files application, in the “Browse” tab and under the “Storage Devices” section. This tab allows you to quickly switch to Drive to immediately access all files saved in the cloud.
Note, however, that Google is still rolling out these new features, gradually, and visibly through an update carried out directly by its servers. Understand that even if you have the latest version of Files by Google installed on your smartphone, you may not yet have access to these new tools and the Drive shortcut. Nothing unusual, you just have to wait.
