It was a shock for many fans of the Kelly Family: In mid-May Angelo Kelly (38) announced that he was leaving the cult band. It was simply "too much" and he had carried a "burnout feeling" with him for almost two years, the 38-year-old said at the time in an "image" interview. In a new episode of the VOX documentary "Goodbye Germany", the musician spoke again about his exit and revealed that it was not just the stress that was responsible for this decision.
So it had dawned on him, before he even went on the tour for the anniversary album "Over the Hump – 25 Years Later" in autumn 2019, that he would very likely see his family very rarely. "You know beforehand it's a long ride and you'll be away a lot from home," said Kelly. That's why he decided shortly before the tour: "This will be my last tour with the Kelly Family."
On the tour itself, he flew back and forth to spend as much time as possible with his wife Kira (40) and his five children in their home in Ireland, "but of course, on the whole, I was of course gone," recalled the family man. For months he had seen his family only sporadically.
His family is the most important thing
His family should also be a priority: "In the long run, my family, privately, must be the most important thing," said Kelly, and the work on the tour, for which the 38-year-old was also responsible as musical director, had "a lot of strength" cost and "took away" a lot of time from his family. "It's not healthy in the long run," says Kelly.
His last concert with the Kelly Family on February 23, 2020 in Munich was nevertheless very difficult for him, recalls the musician: "It was really difficult. It was like preparing for a boxing match." He tried to enjoy it, but it was still "hard". All in all, it was a "nice ending and a great ending".
