Angels in need – work when the Christ Child comes elsewhere

Bernhard Streicher helps people in life-threatening situations every day. This means that he is not only an angel in need for Christmas.

He provides service when people elsewhere gather around the Christmas tree and sing contemplative songs. When children’s eyes shine and families come together. Bernhard Streicher is a dispatcher and call taker at Notruf Niederösterreich, which means he’s not only a first-aid provider for incoming emergency calls, but also the contact person for colleagues in the rescue vehicles. “Supporting people in extreme situations to be their haven of peace is something very special,” emphasizes the 24-year-old. “It’s just a good feeling to be able to help.” He has been on duty at the emergency number in St. Pölten for four years. But for the Haunoldsteiner it is much more than a job. “You are confronted with exceptional situations every day, every conversation goes to the heart, you hope that the emergency call will end well,” he explains. “It’s my absolute dream job” As a child he actually wanted to be a pilot, but now he can’t do anything Imagine something else: “It’s my absolute dream job.” It doesn’t hurt to be there for others on Christmas Eve. “It’s a service like any other,” he says. This year it is even possible that the family will meet at a later hour in the parental home to celebrate together. What does the helper want from the Christ Child? But what does a helper want from the Christ Child in an emergency? “Above all, health,” he says in times of the pandemic. And: “Have a quiet Christmas service, because then people will be fine.”
