Uno discreet announcement and, a few days later, the strike. According to our colleagues from Provence, the former Minister of the Interior Christophe Castaner should take, unless surprised, the presidency of the Supervisory Board of the Grand Port of Marseille. It was the president of the southern region, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, who made the announcement. The position has been vacant since December 2020 and the appointment should officially take place on October 14.

But on the spot, as France 3 reports, the news was greeted with suspicion, even anger. The CGT union of port professions even filed a strike notice from September 30, explaining in a press release: “This announcement questions us and worries us both in form and in substance”. “The announcement of a possible arrival of Mr. Castaner sounds the death knell for economic dynamics as well as social stability, continues the CGT. The Grand Port is not the receptacle of ministers or elected officials deprived of their mandates, eager for recognition or in search of a political springboard”.

“A non-executive and unpaid presidency”

Christophe Castaner himself confirmed his upcoming arrival at the Grand Port of Marseille with BFM d’Ici, specifying that it will not be about “new functions”. “It’s a non-executive and unpaid presidency,” says the former minister. I’ve seen a few reactions from the RN who seem to forget that. For me, it’s more support for the presidential project and the port as part of ‘Marseille en grand’”. Emmanuel Macron has effectively put in place a vast support plan for the large Mediterranean city of Marseille, overwhelmed by several ills, which notably provides for the State to put its hand in its pocket to relieve the Grand Port.

After almost two years of waiting, Renaud Muselier affirms that there is urgency for the Grand port. “I would like a chairman of the supervisory board to be appointed as soon as possible, with a profile capable of opening his address book”, he estimated, considering that “the future of Marseille, of its region, passes through its port.
