Anger of farmers: La France insoumise defends a moratorium on free trade agreements

LFI deputies pleaded Tuesday for a moratorium on “free trade agreements which have not yet entered into force” and the establishment of European floor prices for agricultural raw materials, announcing the tabling of a text in the Assembly in this sense.

LFI will submit “a European resolution proposal”

Deploring the “empty” responses provided so far to farmers by the government, the rebellious elected official Aurélie Trouvé indicated to the press that her group would table a “proposal for a European resolution” “this week”. This text “invites the government to support a moratorium on all free trade agreements which have not yet entered into force”, citing agreements “currently” in negotiation with, among others, India, Indonesia, Australia , Mercosur and Thailand.

These agreements “provide for new import quotas which will further weaken local agriculture”, believes LFI. The French government must “withdraw its mandate for negotiations with Mercosur” because “negotiations are still taking place, contrary to what is said”, insisted Aurélie Trouvé, while Prime Minister Gabriel Attal indicated on Friday that “France “very clearly opposes” the “signing” of this agreement.

In their proposed resolution, which would not have binding value if adopted, the Insoumis also ask for “the application to European borders and French borders, if necessary, of the health, environmental and social safeguard clause, which already exists in international trade rules. To deal with the difficulties in the agricultural world, LFI also pleaded on Tuesday for support for sectors in difficulty, citing in particular “fruits and vegetables” and viticulture, and requested support for the debt of farmers “who want to convert in organic”.

We need a “food recovery plan that targets above all organic, quality and local products through collective catering and food aid for all working-class households,” argued Aurélie Trouvé.
