Even if other mobile games with more or less charm have been more successful than it since, angry Birds remains a classic of smartphones and tablets, which exploded at the same time as mobile devices with touch screens. It has since had many sequels and spin-offs (and even two adaptations to the cinema), and Angry Birds 2 and others are still regularly updated with additional content and new microtransaction possibilities.
However, not very compatible with recent devices and considered too old-fashioned to be supported by Rovio, Angry Birds was pulled from stores in 2019. Faced with strong demand from players to rediscover the original adventure, the Finnish studio had developed a faithful and simplistic remake under Unitysold for €1.19 and without a microtransaction under the name of Rovio Classics: Angry Birds since 2022.
Against all expectations, we will already have to say goodbye to him, at least on the Google Play Store. Rovio has just announced that Rovio Classics: Angry Birds was going to be removed from the Android store (while still playable if you’ve already downloaded it) and be renamed Red’s First Flight on theApp Store. The reason ? “The impact on the wider games portfolio” noted after a “profitability analysis”.
We have reviewed the business case for Rovio Classics: Angry Birds, and due to the game’s impact on our broader game portfolio, we have decided that Rovio Classics: Angry Birds will no longer be listed on the Google Play Store. Thursday, February 23. Additionally, the game will be renamed Red’s First Flight in the App Store pending further review. Rovio Classics: Angry Birds will remain playable on devices the game was downloaded to, even after it has been delisted.
We understand this is sad news for many fans, as well as the team that worked hard to make Rovio Classics: Angry Birds a reality. We are extremely grateful to the Angry Birds fans who have shown their love for the brand and this game from the start. We hope these fans can continue to bring this passion to our live Angry Birds slingshot games such as Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Friends and Angry Birds Journey, where our daily goal is to create the best possible experience for players.
The speech is unclear, but from what the players understand, Rovio Classics: Angry Birds would be too successful and players would prefer spend a pittance to buy it instead of paying microtransactions in newer games. Sympathetic, but not philanthropic, the studio would therefore have decided to cut short this masquerade to consolidate its funds, to the detriment of the pleasure of the users. The community manager buck recalled that if the overall revenues of Rovio decreased, this would be felt on the current games and the following ones, a way of imploring the understanding of the players.
