Anime for Christmas? Granted, anime films that directly address the festival of love tend to be a rare gift. But with Romance, charity and sacrifice for other people convince many of the Anime Christmas Movies and are therefore ideally suited for contemplative hours during the holidays.
When strangers get together on a special occasion or love is in the air, then the Christmas spirit arises. And for some of you at the latest, “The Last Unicorn” is certainly part of the regular Christmas routine. The film is not the only classic on TV that you shouldn’t miss at the festival.

As a US-American-English-German-Japanese co-production, the work is definitely an anime. As the last of its kind, the unicorn learns that a flaming bull from King Haggard has driven all unicorns to the end of the world. But in search of the others, the last unicorn is captured. The magician Schmendrick helps the mythical creature by not completely voluntarily transforming it into a human being.
As Lady Amalthea, the unicorn is fascinated by the human world and Prince Lir, the adopted son of King Haggard, falls in love with the unicorn. Amalthea almost forgot her mission when it is turned back. Can the last unicorn defeat the bull and lead the other unicorns back to their forest?
“The Last Unicorn” was created in the Japanese animation studio Topcraft, whose role was in the Foundation of the Ghibli studio is not entirely clear. After the success of “Nausicaä from the Valley of the Winds”, the former employee of the studio, Hayao Miyazaki, founded the legendary anime forge together with Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata. Kun has always been the baby of the family so far. But now the four-year-old is getting a little sister. Believing that his parents would no longer take care of him, Kun is increasingly haunted by emotional outbursts. If his jealousy of his sister Mirai becomes too great, he seeks refuge in the garden where miraculous things happen.
Quite in Meaning from Charles Dickens’ Christmas story the boy is haunted by the family dog, who has also missed the full attention of masters since Kun was born, his sister from the future and his mother as a little girl. In this way, Kun learns to deal with his feelings and can build a good relationship with his little sister. “Your Name. Yesterday, Today and Forever” is one of the most impressive anime films of the past few years. Visually as well as narrative, nothing to be desired is left here. The fate of Mitsuha, who lives in a village in the Japanese province, and Taki, a student in Tokyo, are linked in an inexplicable and emotional way.
One morning the two realize that they have swapped bodies and have to cope with each other’s lives for a few days a week. As suddenly as it started, the phenomenon stops again, but the two of them can’t get each other out of their heads and pursue the phenomenon when Taki stumbles upon a harrowing and impossible fact.

The award-winning anime “Tokyo Godfathers” takes place on Christmas Eve. Three homeless people who Alcoholic Gin, the transgender woman Hana and the runaway Miyuki find a newborn baby looking for gifts in the garbage of the Shinjuku nightlife district. Together with the child, the three find a note asking the finder to take good care of the baby and a key.
The key leads the team to clues about the birth parents of the baby. So Gin, Hana and Miyuki set out on the selfless search for the baby’s parents and are confronted with their pasts, which they actually wanted to brush away in life on the streets. They learn in the process important lessons about charity and the meaning of family know – because that’s what their community feels like.
