TV presenter Annica Hansen had herself sterilized and is now going public with this sensitive topic.

“People don’t understand,” says Annica Hansen, 41, in an interview with “Bild” when she talks about her lack of desire to have children. And the TV presenter is likely to speak to many women’s hearts, because sentences like “Once the right partner comes along, things will change” or “Wait a minute, the clock will probably start ticking for you soon” are common among women , who consciously do not want to become mothers, are often the order of the day. Especially when they are in public like Annica Hansen. Women who have no desire to have a baby are looked at with “question marks in their eyes.” Planning your life without children seems so astonishing.

Annica Hansen had herself sterilized

Now Annica Hansen went one step further and took matters into her own hands. She had herself sterilized and consciously went public with it. “I would have preferred to have the procedure done when I was 30,” she sums up to “Bild” and explains: “I like children and enjoy playing with them. My best friend has children, I’m an aunt and I think it’s great when they’re here. I just don’t want one myself.”

Female sterilization is a method of permanent contraception. The fallopian tubes are closed, which reliably and permanently protects against pregnancy. Gone are the worries about accidentally becoming pregnant even though you don’t want to. Depending on the method, the costs of sterilization are between 600 and 1000 euros. If pregnancy is strongly discouraged for medical or psychological reasons and other safe contraceptive methods are not an option, the statutory health insurance company can cover the costs upon request. Annica Hansen says: “If I think about what I have already paid or would have paid for contraceptives, it is cheaper.”

Annica Hansen: “For me, the desire to have children never developed”

For Annica Hansen, the small surgical procedure was a liberation. A step towards self-determination and self-confidence choosing the life that she wants from her heart. And that wish list doesn’t say having a child. “For me, the desire to have children never developed. Saying it publicly now was a great liberation for me.” Because: “I was constantly asked about having a child on social media.” And many people know it: As soon as you celebrate your 30th birthday as a woman, the question of having a child becomes louder and louder. Society programs us women to believe that nature intended us to reproduce. Maybe, but we live in the 21st century and thank God we have the choice whether we want children – or not. And that should be respected and accepted without any ifs and buts.

Taboo subject of sterilization

Sterilization is the most common contraceptive method worldwide, but is an absolute taboo subject in Germany. According to “Pro Familia”, this method of contraception is currently used by around 5 percent of women and 5 percent of men between the ages of 18 and 49 in Germany.

In any case, Annica Hansen feels like she has arrived and is overjoyed with the life she has chosen for herself. And with sterilization. Three years ago she fulfilled a lifelong dream and bought a farm with a stable, six horses, three cats and a dog. “For me, I have a much bigger career in equestrian sports today. I’m no longer just some blonde presenter on ProSieben, but very present in the horse world,” she says. And if you look at her Instagram account “woelbchen” you will see a beaming woman smiling at you who has made a decision for herself. And it looks like this was exactly the right one for Annica Hansen.
