- The nuclear-armed states are arming themselves in the face of the Ukraine war and the deterioration in the global security situation.
- The global inventory of operational nuclear weapons has grown over the past year.
- That shows the annual report of the Stockholm peace research institute Sipri.
The global stock of nuclear warheads from the beginning of 2022 to the beginning of 2023 continued to decrease by almost 200 to an estimated 12,512. But the operational nuclear weapons have increased by 86 to an estimated 9576.
The fact that there are fewer nuclear warheads is due to the fact that Russia and the USA, for example, are gradually dismantling the discarded heads. When collecting the data, the peace researchers would therefore look not only at the estimated total stocks but also at the operational arsenals.
In addition, the two by far largest nuclear powers on earth, the USA and Russia, have launched extensive and expensive modernization programs.
According to Sipri, nine countries have nuclear weapons. In addition to Russia and the USA, these are China, France and Great Britain as well as Pakistan, India, Israel and North Korea.
