“Anora” by American director Sean Baker, Palme d’Or 2024 in Cannes

CANNES (Reuters) – The Palme d’Or of the 77th edition of the Cannes International Film Festival was awarded to “Anora” by American director Sean Baker, the president of the jury, Greta Gerwig, announced on Saturday.

A touching story of a meeting between a Brooklyn prostitute and the son of a Russian oligarch, to the great dismay of the young man’s parents, the film won out over the 21 other feature films in competition, some of them by big names director names like Francis Ford Coppola or David Cronenberg.

With “Anora”, Sean Baker continues to explore the theme of sex workers, after “Red Rocket”, in competition at Cannes in 2021, and “The Florida Project” in 2017.

The closing ceremony of the festival was also marked by the presentation of an honorary Palme d’Or to Georges Lucas, the father of “Star Wars”.
