Another attack – activists renamed Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz

Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz in downtown Vienna was quickly renamed “Square of the Failed Culture of Remembrance” by activists on the night of January 27th. The design was reminiscent of real street signs with blue color and white lettering.

In order to legally assess the action, a report was sent to the Vienna public prosecutor’s office, said a police spokeswoman. The stickers on the street signs have already been removed. A restorer will take care of the stickers on the monument on Thursday. The city of Vienna announced last year that it would tilt the monument by 3.5 degrees in order to contextualize it artistically. The implementation is planned for this year. Lueger “founder of modern anti-Semitism” In 2012 the Dr. Karl Lueger Ring was renamed the Universitätsring. Because Lueger is considered – his merits as mayor of Vienna are undisputed – as the “founder of modern anti-Semitism”, it was said at the time. The Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz and the monument still exist today, although there are still discussions and regular events here Protest demonstrations are coming.
