The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) prefers to postpone the launch for several months in order to integrate the many platforms interested in the project.
If you follow the news in the connected home industry, you are probably familiar with the many delays experienced by the Matter protocol.
A new standard that is desired
Matter is a new standard designed to unify the use of home automation products and simplify the experience for the general public. Devices, new or updated, can be controlled by voice via any voice assistant, but also from any home automation platform.
If today it is imperative to check before buying whether the product is compatible with Apple HomeKit or Google Assistant, Matter will no longer ask the question. Devices will also be able to communicate with each other to create more complex and useful day-to-day automations.
The biggest companies with an attraction for home automation, such as Apple, Samsung, Google, Amazon, Signify (Philips Hue), Somfy or IKEA have been partners in the project since day one.
Matter sees partners multiply a few months before its launch
Matter was initially to be offered in 2020, but postponements related to the Covid-19 pandemic and development concerns have pushed the deployment to 2021, then to the end of the first half of 2022. We will still have to wait a few more months since the CSA has just announced that Matter will not be available to the general public until the fall.
However, this new postponement is good news for consumers. Indeed, Matter seems to be a victim of its own success and many technological and industrial groups now want to be part of the adventure on launch day.
While the protocol was originally planned to be compatible with only four platforms, it will now have to have at least 16 by the end of this year. Development teams therefore need more time to rework the SDK and companies that have recently expressed interest in Matter will not be able to access the development tools until the end of the year at best or in 2023.
However, consumers will be able to quickly benefit from Matter solutions at home. There are already nearly 150 accessories that will be compatible this year, counting new products and those updated as will be the case, for example, with Amazon Echo speakers. With the arrival of new players, Matter should very quickly establish itself as a standard and stimulate the growth of the market for connected objects for the home.
