Summer and winter alike, taking care of your skin is essential, and should under no circumstances be overlooked. Finding a routine adapted to our skin as well as products that suit us is never an easy task. In vogue for many years, products based on vitamin C, retinol or zinc are no longer unknown to us, as are their benefits. They act against dull and dry skin to improve their condition but also give them more radiance, and we love them. But have you ever heard of tretinoin, calling it an undeniable anti-aging agent that you won’t be able to do without?
What is the best anti-aging ingredient? A dermatologist answers
Tretinoin belongs to the group of retinoids, derived from vitamin A. It is a pure retinoic acid and therefore, therefore, the most powerful. Known as Retin-A, this ingredient often prescribed for severe acne also helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and spots. And this, more efficiently than other assets in the same family. According to dermatologist Ellen Gendler, based in New York, tretinoin is an indisputable ingredient for reducing the signs of aging. On her TikTok account, the latter shared a video where she praises her merits. “Tretinoin is the only ingredient, which has been present for more than 20 years and used by hundreds of thousands of people, to be proven to help prevent skin aging, skin depigmentation, not to mention acne.“, she explains.
In public opinion, retinol is emerging as the solution to our skin problems. But, according to the New York expert, if you had to use just one product with the aim of preventing the signs of aging, the depigmentation of your skin and the arrival of certain cancers, it would be tretinoin.
Although they belong to the same family, retinol and tretinoin are not entirely similar. Unlike retinol, which is available to everyone, tretinoin is only available with a prescription. Much more powerful, it also has many side effects: redness, irritation, dryness and burning sensations. Its use is also prohibited for pregnant women.
It is found in pharmacies in many creams such as Effederm, concentrated in tretinoin up to 50 mg, or Zanea (0.25 mg). These creams should be integrated into your routine over the long term in order to obtain the expected effects.
Tretinoin: how and how often to apply it?
But a question remains about which one guarantees a boost in the production of collagen and elasticity of your skin, how to use it? Being a photosensitizer, tretinoin can cause irritation and peeling of your skin. It is therefore better to be extra vigilant and start to adopt this active ingredient sparingly, then gradually increase the rate of application and/or the concentration according to your reactions.
Ideally use once a day at bedtime on cleansed and dried skin. After applying your tretinoin cream, you can provide additional hydration with antioxidants such as niacinamide. The morning after application, remember to use moisturizer and, above all, sun protection! Do not hesitate to contact a dermatologist beforehand or prefer retinol which will be more suited to your skin.
