Anti-SUV, don’t worry, Volvo will also offer electric sedans and station wagons

Break and sedans: these bodies are not yet ready to arrive at Volvo in electric, since the Swedish manufacturer still prefers to focus on the SUV segment, a more profitable segment. But electric cars, in the form of station wagons and sedans, will be offered by Volvo.

Before being known for the many SUVs that make up its range, Volvo was best known for its robust station wagons, especially those of the 90s. Station wagons, and not only at Volvo, lost market share with the advent of SUVs , certainly, but the Swedish manufacturer continues to offer the models that have forged its successstarting with the V60 and V90.

But these models, only available with thermal engines or, at best, rechargeable hybrids, no longer really fit into Volvo’s all-electric strategy. Indeed, the manufacturer intends to offer only electric cars from 2030, therefore, if the brand does not intend to offer only electric SUVs, it will have to look into other bodies.

Already three electric SUVs

As of this writing, Volvo offers three 100% electric models, three SUVs, namely the Volvo C40, XC40 and the brand new EX90, the replacement for the XC90. Lovers of sedans and station wagons will not find their account, but Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo, ensures that other types of bodies will arrive later.

“We play on all spectrums and all ranges, and we have customers who need different vehicles, and different uses for their vehicles. We will try to ensure that we can meet all the needs of our customers and future customers”.

First focus on SUVs

Nevertheless, sedans and station wagons will not be Volvo’s priority, the Swedish firm preferring to focus on the SUV segment, much more profitable. The next electric model from Volvo will also be an SUV, a fourth, it will be the EX60, the replacement for the XC60, or perhaps an unprecedented EX30. This mysterious model was seen in the dark during the presentation of the EX90.

“Our strategy is not to have around forty different models. We want to be rigorous. We will deal first with the segments that seem most relevant to us. We already announced that we were going to make a small SUV. Then there will be various other bodies, sedans, station wagons…”

That's it, Volvo only offers electrified cars in France

While Volvo is developing its range, it is now only made up of electrified models (hybrid and electric). Moreover, only automatic gearboxes are now offered in the catalogue.
