Apple AirTags: what can you use them for, and how do they even work?

Apple AirTags are classic UWB and Bluetooth trackers in the shape and size of a two euro coin. Using ultra-broadband technology and the associated app “Where is?” you can easily find your items that you have previously equipped with an AirTag. A distinction is made between closer and more distant things. If you have misplaced your keys in the apartment, you can easily find out where they are using the “exact search” function. The app gives you the direction and the distance to the object of your search and guides you.

Should the item you are looking for – such as your backpack – move outside the UWB range, the Bluetooth tracker will take over. If the search object is within the Bluetooth range of another Apple user, it is encrypted and sent to you without saving the data and a signal indicating the location.

The Apple AirTag runs on a CR2032 battery that Apple claims should last a full year and is replaceable. The basis of the calculation is the assumption that you are looking for your AirTag, i.e. your object, once a day by means of an acoustic signal. You will be informed about the weak battery in your “Where is?” App.
