BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Apple faces new antitrust charges in the coming weeks as part of an investigation launched by the EU after a complaint from Spotify, according to a source close to the case.
Last year, the European Commission accused the iPhone maker of distorting competition in the music streaming market.
In question, restrictive rules on the App Store, Apple’s application store, which prohibit application developers from directing their customers to payment methods other than that of the consumer electronics giant. .
These rules of use have also come under scrutiny in countries such as the United States and Great Britain.
Additional charges, presented in a document called a Supplementary Statement of Objections, are usually set out when the EU competition authority has gathered new evidence, or when certain elements have been changed to support its case.
The Commission declined to comment. Apple did not immediately comment.
Spotify, the world’s largest music subscription service, is one of Europe’s few success stories in consumer technology.
