L’iMessage exclusive to Apple devices is still a major point of differentiation for the brand today. Anyone who has or has had an iPhone knows: the blue bubble is cool because it offers modern features that the bubble doesn’t have! Of the initiatives like that of Nothing attempt to break this exclusivity by adapting iMessage on Android. These efforts, although acclaimed by users, come up against the resistance from the Cupertino companydetermined to keep its messaging service closed to its own ecosystem.

Another initiative has recently managed to stand out: Beeper Mini. This application allows you to access iMessage from an Android smartphone. This initiative has aroused keen interest, particularly among those wishing to interoperability between iOS and Android. But to do this, it exploits a flaw in Apple’s messaging system.

Apple blocks iMessage on Android for security reasons

Beeper Mini relies on fictitious identifications to connect Android users to iMessage, a method that has caught Apple’s attention. The American firm has since taken steps to block this techniqueinvoking in a declaration to our colleagues at 9to5Google, risks for the security and confidentiality of its users. According to her, Beeper Mini would facilitate L’exposure of sensitive metadata and would further expose iPhone owners to unwanted messages, spam and phishing.

For the creators of Beeper Mini, this action proves that Apple just wants to maintain its control over the iPhone’s messaging services. The developers ensure that their application maintains message encryption and protects user privacy more than traditional SMS.

If Apple refuses to extend iMessage outside its ecosystem, Europe is pushing the firm to open the iPhone to more modern standardized systems. We are thinking in particular of RCS (Rich Communication System) which Google has already integrated into Android. Indeed, Apple announced the integration of this system into iPhones in 2024. This will greatly facilitate interoperability rich messages between iOS and Android.
