Sometimes seemingly innocuous things can dramatically change an experience. With the iPhone 4S in 2011, the world discovered voice assistants on smartphones. Since then, these have not ceased to evolve, to improve, but also to change in their way of triggering.
Today, the fastest way to launch its voice assistant is still the voice and Apple would like to simplify this experience for its users with Siri. In any case, this is announced by journalist Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
A new, more efficient command
The Cupertino company is preparing to transform its traditional voice trigger command “Say Siri” in a single “Siri” followed by an instruction. The company would have looked into the question for several months and could offer this novelty in 2023 or 2024.
This seemingly small change is actually a complex affair requiring more work in the AI models used to not wake up the assistant at the wrong time. The apple would have already tested the formula with its employees and collected the training data necessary for the change.
Since Siri is adept at understanding multiple languages and dialects, the likelihood of being triggered unintentionally increases mechanically as the number of words required is reduced.
A delay to go up for Apple
Some assistants have already benefited from a similar change, such as Amazon’s Alexa which responds to voice commands “Alexa” to be activated. For its part, the Google Assistant also offers more fluid interactions, allowing reminders without having to repeat “Okay Google”.
Apple would also like to better integrate its assistant into third-party apps to improve its ability to understand. Siri has grown well over time, but still lags behind its main competitors. Cupertino seems to be aware of this.
