Desktop computer fans were also treated to their moments of glory at Apple’s latest conference. The manufacturer has finally decided to improve its iMacwhich had technically not evolved for two years.

It was with an avalanche of figures that Apple tried to convince its audience that the new 2023 iMac was a revolution. “2x faster than the M1 model“, “4.5K screen with 11.3 million pixels“, “30% better performance on applications like Safari or Excel»… Don’t throw any more away. Behind all this marketing language hides an all-in-one computer which has finally had the right to carry Apple’s new chips.

A starting price of €1,599

The last iMac model dated from 2021 and had never switched to M2 chips. Apple is therefore skipping a generation in its desktop computer, by making it evolve directly from the M1 chip to the M3 chip. On the program differently: the same 11.5 mm thick screen, the same 24-inch display and the same minimalist and polished design. All the new features are inside in short.

The iMac relies on the M3 chip to allow professionals to load images into Photoshop, or export videos to Final Cut, twice as fast as before. For those who would go directly from an Intel iMac model to this new M3 iMac, Apple promises “4x faster than the best Intel model“. In addition to presenting its computer as a super productivity machine, Apple is also positioning the iMac as a good gaming machine, thanks to the performance of its latest generation chip which features ray-tracing.

Unfortunately for those who were waiting for an iMac Pro, the machine did not make an appearance during the keynote. As a result, the new iMac is only available with the M3 chip, no M3 Pro or M3 Max to declare here. The base model starts at €1599 and has 8 CPU cores, 8 GPU cores, 256 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM.

Available November 7

Slightly beefier models with 10 GPU cores or more storage are also available, for prices ranging from €1,829 to €2,059. It is obviously possible to add RAM or storage, for a few hundred euros more. The computer is available with 7 different colors, if you want to avoid the classic blue.

Just to clear its conscience, Apple indicates that the foot is made to “100% recycled aluminum” as “multiple circuit boards that use 100% recycled gold plating“. Unfortunately, these beautiful figures hide a more complex reality and, if the 2023 iMac is just as complicated to repair as the 2021 model, then we cannot say that this new device is really progress for the environment.

The iMac 2023 is available for pre-order and will arrive in stores from November 7.
