Apple in the sights of American justice for anticompetitive practices

(AOF) – The US Department of Justice and 16 attorneys general file a lawsuit against Apple for monopoly. On the stock market, the technology group’s action fell 3.74% to $171.98, thus posting the biggest drop in the Dow Jones index. The iPhone maker is accused of violating anti-competition laws by preventing rivals from accessing its devices’ hardware and software. “Apple implements its exclusionary anti-competitive behavior in two main ways,” explained Justice Minister Merrick Garland.

“First, Apple imposes contractual restrictions and fees that limit the features and functionality that developers can offer to iPhone users. Second. Apple selectively restricts access to connection points between third-party apps and the iPhone system. ‘operating the iPhone’.

Before adding: “For consumers, this means less choice; higher prices and fees; lower quality smartphones, applications and accessories and less innovation from Apple and its competitors “For developers, this means they are forced to follow rules that protect Apple from competition.”

Responding to the ruling, Apple said the lawsuit was “factually and legally erroneous” and that it intends to “vigorously defend against this action.” The technology firm judges that it “would create a dangerous precedent, allowing the government to intervene heavily in the design of the technology”.

US brokerage Wedbush, which has an Outperform rating on Apple, said it believed the iPhone maker could have to pay a hefty fine and reach a compromise with developers over the structure of the App Store in the future.
