Like Google and Baidu, Apple is reportedly in talks with Anthropic to use its generative AI (AI) capabilities in its iPhones.
Apple would therefore consider using Claude 3, Anthropic’s LLM, in iOS 18, according to The Verge. The new mobile OS should soon offer greater customization of its home screens, but it is not yet known for which features the language model will be used.
As a reminder, Anthropic is an American company specializing in artificial intelligence which was founded in 2021 by former members of OpenAI.
The “Rolls-Royce of models” of AI
Launched at the beginning of the month, the new version of the chatbot, Claude 3, offers three models: Haiku, Sonnet and Opus, which integrate different functionalities. Opus and Sonnet are already available in 159 countries via the company’s website, but also through the Claude API. The faster Haiku model will be available soon, according to Anthropic.
According to Anthropic’s tests, the Opus model outperforms GPT-4 from OpenAi and Google Gemini in several key areas, including university-level knowledge and expert reasoning, as well as solving mathematical problems of basic level and coding skills. Results that led Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to describe Claude 3 as the “Rolls-Royce of models” of AI.
With generative AI becoming a key element of the smartphone market, Apple has been lagging behind its competitors for some time. This is the reason why the Apple firm decided to put an end to the Apple Car project, started 10 years ago, to concentrate on this technology.
