With the next iPhone 16 Pro, Apple would evolve the rear photo module by introducing a new sensor. According to a new message from renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published this week in Mediumthe Apple firm would have opted for an ultra wide-angle of 48 Mpx, compared to 12 Mpx on previous generations.
Thanks to this development, we would find the technology of pixel-binning already present on the main sensor of the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro. The ultra-wide-angle would thus merge four pixels into one in order to deliver 12 Mpx shots that are brighter and more detailed. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max would also be capable of recording photos in 48 Mpx ProRAW format with the new ultra-wide-angle sensor.
The iPhone 16 Pro will be entitled to another new feature in its photo section. Indeed, information from December 2023, again from Ming-Chi Kuo, points to the introduction of a specific feature of the iPhone 15 Pro Max: the periscopic lens with a tetraprism lens, which allows you to take advantage of a zoom optical x5.
In the publication Medium this Thursday, Ming-Chi Kuo adds that Apple will complete the transition of the photo module to 48 Mpx sensors in 2025, by moving the telephoto lens to this definition on the iPhone 17 Pro. As a reminder, the latter displays 12 Mpx since the iPhone 7 Plus.
The analyst ends by mentioning that the iPhone 17 will have a 24 Mpx selfie sensor (compared to 12 Mpx on the iPhone 15 and 16), “which will significantly improve the quality of the image”. We learn in passing that the unit cost of this new sensor will be 100 to 120% higher.
