Apple is still hungry and teases a future Mac Pro with an M1 chip

Apple makes it clear that it will soon present a Mac Pro with an M1 chip to deploy maximum power.

Apple made several announcements during its Peek Performance keynote. We note in particular the presentation of an M1 Ultra chip which comes to equip one of the versions of the new Mac Studio whose power already impresses on Geekbench. Also, the company allowed itself a little teasing about the future Mac Pro M1.

As a reminder, the M1 chips (the initial model, Pro, Max and now Ultra) benefit from an ARM architecture and a design provided by Apple. The Cupertino company is no longer dependent on Intel and can therefore go further on the performance and energy efficiency of its machines. Almost all Apple devices have tasted this transition, but there is still one: the Mac Pro.

The Apple Mac Pro is a desktop PC that, in its DNA, seeks to make no compromises. The tower is dedicated to professionals who need maximum power and the right connections to go with it.

Except that the last model of the Mac Pro dates from 2019 and, at the time, Apple had not yet started its transition to ARM (Apple Silicon). But John Ternus, head of hardware engineering at Apple, split a short sentence at the end of the conference.

Speaking of the Mac Studio and the Studio Display, he explains that “these products […] join the rest of our amazing Mac lineup with Apple Silicon making our transition almost complete with just one more product to add: Mac Pro. But that’s for another day“.

Everything therefore suggests that, thanks to the tower format of the Mac Pro, Apple unlocks even more puffy capacities than on a much more compact Mac Studio. It remains to be seen when exactly this future computer could see the light of day. Some could bet on an announcement as early as WWDC in June, but the event is more focused on new software. We could also bet on an official presentation shortly after the start of the school year, around September or October.
