Apple just released iOS 16.5.1(c), here’s why you need to install it now

If you’re the type who pays attention to Apple’s updates, you might have noticed weird things happening with iOS updates.

Last week, the company released iOS 16.5.1(a) to iPhones, but the update was pulled shortly after, following reports that it broke the Safari browser when it was used to visit websites such as Facebook, Instagram and Zoom. The update was supposed to fix a WebKit browser engine security bug that was being actively exploited. This update was therefore considered critical.

And if you thought we already had an iOS 16.5.1 update, you were right. This was released at the end of June and also focused on WebKit bugs.

We now have iOS 16.5.1(c) (as well as iPadOS 16.5.1(c) for the iPad), which we hope fixes WebKit issues without breaking the Safari browser.

iOS 16.5.1 (c) update

Here’s how Apple describes this update: “Rapid Security Responses iOS 16.5.1 (c) and iPadOS 16.5.1 (c) includes security content from Rapid Security Responses iOS 16.5.1 (a) and iPadOS 16.5.1 ( a) and fixes an issue that prevents some websites from displaying correctly.”

Updates with designations (a) and (c) are referred to as “RSR releases”, short for “Rapid Security Responses”. These are security updates only and contain no new features.

To manually install iOS 16.5.1(c), tap Settings Then General > Software Update. Then press Download and install to start the update and keep your iPhone safe.
